Archival material belongs to the archives

Photographs, documents and footage reproduced here are the property of the institutions that hold them, not of Riddled History. Wherever such material is used we credit the holding institution and the individual object, and we use it only within that institution’s own terms.

If you want to reuse an archival item you found through us, go to the institution that holds it — the credit will name them. Our copy is not a source of rights.

If you believe something has been used here in error or outside its terms, write to us and we will put it right.

Getting things wrong

These stories come from an incomplete record, and sources often disagree. We say which claims are established, which rest on a single source, and which are simply unknown.

We still make mistakes. When one is found it is corrected and the correction noted, rather than quietly edited away. If you are building on this work, go to the primary sources we cite.

Imagery

Where no photograph of a scene exists, one is illustrated rather than left blank. Illustrated scenes are marked as reconstructions on screen, and where a reconstructed document shows text, that text is reproduced word for word from the historical record with the source given. An illustration is never presented as an archival photograph.
